Launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly, Nelson Mandela International Day was inspired by a call of the late father of our nation a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

As the world reflects on Nelson Mandela’s legacy, we give thanks for his life, his leadership, his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes. We salute and thank him for his sacrifices for our freedom and our future.

By giving a little of your time to make a change that’s close to your heart or by giving a little of your time to make a difference to the life of someone else, you can start changing the world around you. There are so many ways to make a difference. Start with what you are passionate about and where you know your actions will have a lasting impact. In the spirit of Madiba and his vision to spread social justice and freedom for all, this is your chance to become a part of a continuous global movement for good. Make everyday count.
